The signs and symptoms of peri menopause and menopause. Either word can strike dread in the hearts and minds of all women. Unfortunately, every woman’s life will change from the one she has known since puberty. What are the signs and symptoms of menopause and what can you do to prepare for them.

Somewhere between the ages of 40 to 59 is when most women begin to feel the effects of menopause but it has been know to occur almost anytime beyond the age of 30 or so. It is not uncommon for many women to experience menopause about the same age that their mothers did but not in all cases.

In some instances there are exceptions and one being is if both the ovaries and the uterus have been surgically removed. In this case women will experience what is known as “surgical menopause”. In cases where the ovaries remain after surgery, gradual menopause will occur as less hormones are produced over time.

Menopause is usually preceded by what is called Peri menopause. As a woman ages, her ovaries gradually begin to produce less and less of the female hormones progesterone and estrogen. This process can be slight at first and symptoms mild.

When this occurs changes in the menstrual cycle begin quite often with skipped periods or they may even occur closer together. Your flow will become more noticeably lighter or heavier and most often are accompanied by hot flashes.

Hot flashes usually begin with a warm feeling starting in your chest and with wave like sensations pulsate into your head. You may experience a redding of your skin and begin to sweat.

Nausea and dizziness along with their companions, rapid heartbeat and headaches may also occur but usually these are the most prominent signs and symptoms of peri menopause in the early changes of life.

If hot flashes occur at night, night sweats and trouble sleeping may produce tiredness the next day making the whole process even more miserable.

Unfortunately, emotional side effects are also quite common. Sadness, anxiety, frustration and tiredness are among these and if you experience these to the extreme you should see your physician immediately as there are medications that will lessen these effects.

Peri menopause and menopause itself is a gradual process and can take several years to get through. Most women find that menopause has ended when no period has taken place for at least 12 months. A simple blood test performed by your doctor can help you determine what stage of menopause you are in.

It is important to remember that all women experience menopause in different ways. The process can be fairly quick for some women and symptoms mild but for other it can take longer with more discomfort.

The good news is that there are a ton of new and exciting product available today both natural and prescribed that can have a huge effect on how you get through menopause. Treatments also include hormone replacement therapy and these should be discussed with your doctor to experience the results you desire.
