Its not easy to forget the heyday of the transformers. Obviously the recent movie that came out created new fans of the genre, but nothing can quite beat the good old days of the 1980s.
I remember running home from school just so I wouldn’t miss the beginning. I often wondered why the networks put the TV show on at 3:30 pm, when my school didn’t close until 3:20 pm. It only gave me a measily 10 minutes to make it home on time.
But I never missed it. I could run really fast when I was a kid. When I made it home, I’d head straight for the living room and turned on CBS. I was in my own little world for 30 minutes. It was a feast for the eyes watching the autobots and the decepticons battle it out over supremacy of the planet.
But even better than the Transformers TV show, were the transformers action figures. I was hooked on these things. To say, I had a big collection would be a gross understatement. If you walked in my room, that would probably the only thing you would have noticed.
I also remember the the horrible knock offs that the transformers inspired. Remember the train wreck that were the Go Bots. Who actually played with them? They look like they were put together by spare parts. They just couldn’t compete with the transformers.
They were so unique and ahead of their time. Sure, anybody can think of a robot that transforms into something. But how about coming up with multiple robots that can transform into one giant robot? Well the lovely people at Hasbro did.
I probably saved every allowance and bought each Constructicon, until I had all of them and I could Devastator. Great fun, and a great marketing plan.
However you want to look at it, there will never be toy line quite like this.
