We all know that once flowers are severed at the stem, they will eventually decay. We can lengthen the time that flowers look their best by following several guidelines. In doing so we can take more enjoyment out of an investment, which is often hefty when buying from a florist.
You won’t know how long a flower has been in storage, how old it is, or when it was arranged into a presentation unless you ask. Inquire with your florist about these things so you yourself have an idea of how long you can expect the flower to live under good terms. If you’re lucky, you may even find a florist who is able to guarantee the flower for a special amount of time.
It is recommended that you also cut the stems of the flower once obtained. The ends of the stems seem to become callused and the flower won’t be able to draw water. Cu the stem at a diagonal line so you increase the surface area exposed to water or nutrients you give the flower. This doesn’t have to be a huge cut by any means.
You will have to protect your flower arrangement from bacteria if you are going to expect it to live long. Bacteria may be present in a vase, residue from previous flowers in which the water wasn’t changed, and even if the leaves of the flower dip below the water line. In keeping bacteria out you will ensure your flower won’t decay prematurely due to an infection.
The right vase should be tall enough to cover around three inches of the stem in water. This is considered normal for the plant to have proper access to water. Any less or more may negatively influence the life of your flower. Also make sure that any crevices present in the vase are well rinsed out, since soap may hide in such places after cleaning the vase. Some florists will give you a vase with the flowers as a gift that you can use.
Keep your flowers away from anything that would harm them. Some florists may dye flowers to make them festive for events such as Valentine’s Day. Although this is creative and nice, it will also lower the life expectancy of the flower more often than not. Some bouquets may also mutilate flowers to appear a certain way- which will also drastically decrease the amount of time you can expect your flower to live.
