SEO (search engine optimization) is a necessary method for bringing visitors to your website. People searching for your site will not likely find it unless it is listed on the first three to five pages of a search engine. Using search engine optimization will bring your site nearer to the top of the rankings.
How Do You Apply SEO?
You can pay someone to do SEO on your site or you can do it yourself. If you have a big website that is going to be a big money maker, you may want to shell out the hundreds of dollars necessary to have professionals take care of your website creation and optimization. If you have a small to medium website, and have intermediate internet skills, you should handle the search engine optimization yourself. It is really not that difficult and it should be done if you want the search engines to correctly index your site.
You can get links that point back to your site by writing a lot of articles and submitting each one to a lot of article directories. If you have an interesting website with lots of good content, other websites may ask to use your content on their own sites — including a link back to yours. You may also want to pay other webmasters to place your link in strategic areas of their web pages. Their visitors will click on those links and visit your site. Of course, you’ll also get the back-link to bring you up in the search engine rankings.
Making sure that your Meta tags are correct is another factor in SEO. All of your web pages should have correct titles, and your META tags should have a great site description with your primary keywords. When someone does a search, the META tag information is what they will see as a description of your site. Websites that have only a title or URL when you do a search means that they did not have proper SEO done. Most people will skip over these types of web pages.
SEO can also be applied by making sure you have textual content. Videos and pictures may be nice, but search engines can only read text so they don’t recognize them for the great content they really are. Having great content in the form of articles, and using the appropriate keywords, is a better way to let the search engine bots find your site. Use audio and video to interest your visitors once they find you.
You Should Not
Do not use the same keyword repetitively. Although keywords are necessary to having a good ranking with the search engines, they have become wise to people who try to cheat the system by repeatedly using a keyword over and over again, for no good reason.
Avoid the use of text that is colored to blend into the background. Webmasters caught on to the fact that if they place keywords on their websites and match it to the background, a visitor cannot see it, but a search engine spider can. After an update, these websites were penalized because they were once again trying to cheat the search engines.
Using the same content on different web pages is a trick that some webmasters still try. This is another tactic that hurts more than it helps in the ranking system. You can’t publish one article or get it from another online source and use it on your own pages. Search engines consider this duplicate content, and with good reason. Why would a visitor want to visit numerous sites and still see the same, exact information.
Lots of keywords make no sense. This is a trick that you may have come across on a few different websites. You are scrolling through a site and when you get to the bottom, you see a list of keywords that are not linked. Website owners try this to get the search engines to rank them well for these keywords that are just placed on their pages. Like the same colored text trick, this no longer works in most cases and you can be banned from different search engines.
