Before you do a Pomeranian hair cut you want to give your dog a bath. The most important part of the bath is to avoid getting water in the eyes, nose or ears. You can place cotton balls in the ears to protect them from water.
After the bath you should towel dry before gently blow drying. While using the blow dryer you should also use a soft slicker brush and brush in the direction of the head. There are dryers you can buy specifically for dogs, but you can use a human hair dryer as long as you keep it on the low heat setting otherwise you can aggravate the skin and dry out the hair.
Then when you cut your dogs hair you want to start with the head and most specifically the ear tips. This is a difficult process since you don’t want to cut the actual ear. To prevent this the best method is to pinch the ear leather between your fingers so they can act as a protect barrier.
Cut at a horizontal angle when trimming the tips of the ears, to do this make sure your scissors are parallel to the dogs eyes while you are cutting. On your second cut make a slightly tilted angle. This will provide the ears with a softer angle that keeps the ears from looking too pointy. Next you should brush the hair around the head towards the front of the dog. Cut away any excess hair you see in order to give a circular shape when viewed from the front.
After you have trimmed the ears you want to brush the hair around the head towards the front. Next cut the excess hair away from their head to give an overall circular shape. When you are doing a Pomeranian hair cut it is a good idea to use your fingers as guides in case the Pomeranian suddenly leaps forward. Next brush all the chest hair up and trim it at an angle that aims towards the knee to have a tidy appearance. This will also help to give the Pomeranian the standard circular appearance when viewed from the side.
Now you can move on to the body. Turn the dog sideways and trim the hairs underneath in a semi-circular shape. You should start your Pomeranian hair cut about one third up the back of the front leg and go in a semi-circular shape from there, ideally ending about one third of the way up on the back leg, although you can adjust this cut to fit the length of your Pomeranian’s legs. If there are any excess hairs sticking out of the midriff section then you should trim them away.
You can adjust the cut in order to fit the length of your dog’s legs. At the same time trim away any excess hair that is sticking out of the midriff. For the tail you should trim around the base to give a tidy shape. Then twist the end of the tail and hold it straight up the dogs back. Cut the length wherever you think it will lay best.
The last step in a Pomeranian hair cut is to trim away hair on the feet that causes the rabbit foot look. You will also need to trim underneath the feet which requires you to place the dog on their back since this provides the most control over the dog and scissors.
