There are few things more fun than bringing a new puppy home to meet the family. However, excitement soon wanes when that adorable bundle of fuzz goes to the bathroom on your carpet. The first type of training that generally takes place between a new dog owner and his puppy is housebreaking, so educating yourself as to the finer points of Labrador potty training will be valuable information to have prior to brining your new dog home from the breeder.
Labrador potty training will first consist of teaching your pup the appropriate place to potty. This might mean your backyard or a papered corner in the bathroom, depending on your needs and lifestyle. Once your dog has mastered where to go, he can begin to let you know that he needs to potty by barking at you, whining at the back door or simply heading to his appointed spot.
The crate has become a very popular and effective method of Labrador potty training today. Since most dogs will not eliminate in the same spot that they sleep or eat, your Lab puppy will wait to potty until you take him out of the crate and to the appropriate spot where he can go to the bathroom.
Since puppies have small, untrained bladders, you won’t want to leave your dog in his crate for too long in the beginning stages of Labrador potty training. Take your puppy outside every couple of hours when he is very young, and place him immediately in the spot that you want him to potty in.
If you catch your pup in the act of going potty on your carpet or in another inappropriate spot, simply give him a firm no, and immediately take him outside. If you find a spot on the carpet after the fact, clean it up quickly and thoroughly with an enzymatic carpet cleaner that will take the smell out completely.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your puppy will have the occasional accident. If you catch your dog in the act of going potty on your carpet, offer a firm no and immediately take your pup outside to finish his business. If you find the accident after the fact, it does no good to scold your dog at this point, because he doesn’t remember the act once it’s finished. Simply clean up the spot quickly and thoroughly so your dog can’t remember the location by the smell.
Use an enzymatic carpet cleaner designed to eliminate pet stains. If you are fortunate enough to catch your pup in the act, a firm no and a quick trip to the appropriate spot should get the message across.
Rest assured that your pup will eventually get the hang of potty training, and you will not have to deal with this issue forever.
