The Mini Shar Pei comes from a recessive gene in their DNA. These dogs were once considered mistakes, but recently the gene responsible was discovered.
Mini Shar Peis can only be a solid color with a bluish or black tongue. The colors range from red, fawn, black and brown. The puppies are completely wrinkled with the adults taking the brunt of the wrinkles in the face and neck area while only some wrinkling will be on the body. There are some Mini Shar Peis that are tight skinned, with only wrinkles on the face.
The Mini Shar Pei was born due to a recessive gene in the DNA. There have been Miniature Shar Pei Dog Clubs formed to help regulate the breeding of these cute miniature dogs.
The Mini Shar Pei’s most noticeable characteristic is the wrinkling around his face. He is a short dog who is broad and square. Shar Peis were originally bred in China hundreds of years ago. They were bred as fighting dogs and through the years became known as guard dogs. Today these dogs are our loveable companions.
They are fiercely loyal to their families and will defend them from any stranger. If a Mini Shar Pei is not socialized early in his life he will become naturally aggressive towards people. The obedience training and socialization is a major component to mastering this breed. They are small but powerful dogs and become quite defensive when their own territory or family is in question. Mini Shar Peis are loveable, funny and very affectionate with their own family members. They make great family pets. Mini Shar Peis make great companion dogs especially for the elderly.
Originally the Mini Shar Pei defined its work. They were the official guard dogs for the royal Chinese family. Their bodies are suited very well for defense. They have small eyes and small triangular ears which are hard to grab and if someone grabs them they will get a handful of wrinkled skin which gives the dog time to turn around and bite. The nickname for the breed is the Golden Lion.
At one time they were considered the rarest breed on earth. They have started to thrive over the last century and have become devoted and loveable family pets. Many wonder if maybe they were first bred as companion dogs rather than fighting dogs.
They slowly began to reappear in the last century only to become beloved family pets. People speculate as to whether maybe these dogs were first bred as companion dogs rather than fighting dogs. The Mini Shar Pei with its wrinkly face and black tongue is now one of the most popular dogs on earth.
