Yorkies are wonderful dogs, but if you want them to look and feel their very best, then Yorkshire Terrier grooming is going to be an important part of their life. Grooming needs to be performed regularly on these dogs, primarily because of the length of their fur and how low they are to the ground. Their small stature results in them getting dirty more quickly than other breeds of dog.
Yorkshire Terrier grooming, along with exercise and temperament, are all characteristics that any prospective dog owner must take into consideration before buying a dog. Proper grooming has much more impact than on just the physical look of our dog, as keeping your dog looking great is going to keep their confidence up and make them more sociable as well. Regular grooming can also amount to preventive medicine by alerting you to skin diseases and ticks, for instance.
Keep in mind that grooming a Yorkshire Terrier depends on whether you have a pet or a show quality Yorkie as this will inform you how frequently you are going to have to groom them and what this is going to need to include.
For instance, if you have noticed that your dog has a lot of dry skin or dander, you are going to want to find a shampoo that will moisturize. On the other hand if their coat tends to get oily, you will want to use a shampoo that is not going to add even more oil.
As for cleaning the teeth, this is important with Yorkies because they are prone to excess tarter buildup on the teeth. If left and not cleaned on a regular basis, their teeth can then end up becoming infected and possibly even rotting. If you do not feel comfortable cleaning their teeth on your own then you can always bring them in to the veterinarian and have them do it for you.
Yorkshire Terrier grooming is a lot more important than you may think. Even though Yorkies are a small dog breed they require regular and thorough grooming because of the long silky coat. If your dog is simply a pet and does not compete in dog shows a Yorkshire Terrier hair cut is very appropriate.
Their hair, nails, teeth and gums must also be cleaned and maintained, as this will also have a significant impact on their confidence and self esteem.
If you want your beloved pet to live as long and healthy a life as possible then it is important you keep up with their grooming routine. The best idea is to keep a calendar so that you can keep track of the grooming that needs to be performed on your dog and when. This way you will have a reminder and will not forget and lose track. If you are lazy or just very busy and cannot find the time, then you do always have the option of bringing your dog into the veterinarian and have them do the work for you.
