A great dog for any family is a Havanese. These playful and loyal dogs are hypoallergenic and do not shed so they are perfect for inside your house. Yet one problem may arise in toilet training these animals. Havanese paper training is the best way to ensure your house stays clean from the droppings of these cute dogs. It also allows you to forget about having to take your dog outside several times a day to do its business.
Toilet training is a must for these small dogs because like most toy breed dogs, they have very bad bladder control and therefore can end up leaving a mess everywhere. Also this is a reason to take the training slow as it is harder for them than the average dog. If you can, buy a small crate, training pads and an exercise pen to make the training much easier.
You may be concerned about toilet training, as like most toy dogs, this breed takes a little longer than the average dog to learn to control its bladder. Even though the process can take a while, it pays off in the long run to have a fully trained dog.
Set up your pen and make sure it’s in there when you don’t have your eye on it, make sure you play with it lots though. Cover the whole floor of the yard with newspaper or training pads if you have these. This makes the entire area allowable for your dog to use as a bathroom. Also build a small doorless home in the pen, using a crate or similar.
After letting the dog get used to this area for a few days, you will notice that he starts using a certain place the most to do his business. This will be the area where he will learn to go to excrete. As he gets used to this certain area, start removing the newspaper very gradually, and continue this Havanese paper training over a period of days. After a while you should be left with a sheet of paper that will be the dog’s bathroom.
Now it is time to slowly increase the size of the exercise yard. Slowly and steadily reducing the amount of paper is most important, don’t let the dog get to confident and end up relieving itself everywhere. You can even try increasing the pen to several rooms by blocking them off.
Now that your puppy is sticking to his chosen area, you can increase the size of the pen slowly like how you decreased the size of the papers. In a while you should be able to let the dog travel several rooms of your house while always coming back to the paper to relieve itself. Another advantage of your dog being trained in this is that wherever you take it, you have the option of finding a quiet spot and letting it do its business on a piece of paper or a pad.
You should now have a perfectly toilet trained dog, not to mention one that is hypoallergenic, and does not shed hair. If things start to not go well, you may have to bring in some more paper and the exercise pen again, but it should get down to a routine in no time. Treat this cute dog well and appreciate how much easier it is to keep now that its droppings are easy to clean and where you want them.
