Many individuals want a small dog that they can raise in their home, and this is especially true for individuals that live in an apartment or condo setting where space is limited. Many of these individuals choose to purchase or adopt Chihuahuas since they are the smallest breed of dog on the planet. However it is important that these individuals understand what to expect from Chihuahuas before they bring them home.
Although Chihuahuas are very small they actually need quite a bit of space when they want to run and play. In fact many experts recommend that you provide your Chihuahua with a fenced-in backyard that allows them to run around freely. If you live in an apartment or condo where this isn’t possible, you can still provide your Chihuahua with room to run around by taking them outside on an extended leash. This allows them to run around fairly unrestrained while you still maintain control of them.
Chihuahuas are also dogs that enjoy being around people. They are highly interactive and get lonely rather quickly, thus it may be best for you to place your Chihuahua in doggy daycare if you are away at work all day.
Others choose to purchase an additional Chihuahua dog to prevent their original pet from becoming lonely while they are gone all day. This is a good option for individuals that may not be able to afford the cost of daycare for their dog. However the cost to care for an extra dog may be just as much as the cost of daycare.
Due to the fact Chihuahua dogs enjoy being around other dogs, you should have your pet fixed as soon as possible. They are the smallest breed of dog, which makes them very vulnerable to attach if they get out when they are in heat. Dogs that want to be left alone will have no problem providing serious injury or death to your Chihuahua.
Individuals should be aware that Chihuahuas dogs are very possessive and have a natural instinct to protect their owner even though most only weigh five to ten pounds. Not only will Chihuahua dogs bark at strangers or anyone posing a threat, but they will often bite or attack the individual. Even individuals living in the same house aren’t always safe from the attack if the Chihuahua makes a strong, special bond with one individual.
While you may be turned off by a dog that growls and barks at everyone, Chihuahuas can actually make great pets as they are very intelligent and have some great qualities. However their possessive behavior should cause some individuals and families to consider whether or not they really are the best pet for them.
Finding a dog that fits your family’s needs and wants can ensure that the new addition to your family fits perfectly.
