Murcia is a region in Spain and also the capital city of this region. This city is located in the south east region of Spain and is alongside the Segura River. A very popular landmark in Murcia is the cathedral. Construction on this building started in 1394, the tower however wasn’t completed until 1782. There are many different styles of architecture due to the long period of building.

Near to the Cathedral there is a building known as the bishops palace. This is where the local bishop lives. This was built in the 18th century. The official name of this building is the Palacia Episcopal.

There is also an interactive science museum which is very popular with many tourists, this is the Museum of Science and Water. There are many interactive displays and experiments which revolve around the theme. There are also many different shows and exhibitions which are very interesting to go and see. Your children might even love the planetarium!

Murcia is located in Costa Blanca, and so the weather is perfect. This means that the water is very popular. There are some truly amazing beaches and most of the days are nice and warm. It rarely rains in Murcia. The beautiful weather makes the water very enjoyable. The Mar Menor is a very popular small sea which is actually a lake.

Next to the river there is a landscaped square known as the Glorieta. This is a fantastic place to visit as it is in the centre of the town. You can also see the town hall which is in the centre of the square. The city favors walking, and has many pedestrian routes throughout the city. These make it easy to explore the sights.

Festivals you should enjoy

There are quite a few very special festivals which are held in Murcia. Most of these are based on religious events and are at the same time as other important religious holidays. There are many parades around the major catholic holidays such as Christmas and Easter.

The most famous festivals are the holy week processions. These processions are worth going to see, you get to see large sculptures taken from museums and paraded all around the city. These sculptures are to signify Christ until he was crucified. There are daytime processions, and also night time candle light processions.

Travelling to Murcia

The most conveniently located airport to Murcia is San Javier Airport. This is around 45km from the centre of the city. Although this is a small airport, it has been expanding recently. It is an international airport and has direct flights to and from cities. There you will be able to hire a car to Murcia.
