A well-written profile is equivalent to having good table manners on a first date. If you don’t pay attention to the basics in dating either online or offline, you could miss out on a romantic connection.

The analogy of table manners is the same as having an organized and logical profile. Now this doesn’t need to be an eloquent five-paragraph essay, but just like in meeting someone face to face you have only seconds to impress that person. So choose your words wisely. Avoid swearing or using slang (at least use them sparingly), stick to point, and don’t bore your reader with details.

The most important tip, though, is to be creative. This is more important than being short, clean, and to the point in your profile because you want to make yourself stand out from the rest.

Treat your written profile like a research project. Search for ten men or women in your area with similar characteristics and who you might consider competitors. Read their profiles carefully and make a list of the things each of those people mention, for example Chinese food, interesting movies or books and enjoying travel. You’ll probably notice that most people mention the same things and that is important because you should NOT mention those things in your profile. Be different. Don’t describe yourself in a clich or generic way.

Similarly find ten men or women whose profiles you like the most and would be interested in getting to know. Again, read each profile carefully and make a list of the things he or she writes about. If you share any of those interests, then you should definitely mention this in your profile.

The point is to make a good impression on your potential connections so that he or she will contact you. Proving that you have a common bond will get them interested and then later you can woo them with your e-mails.
