A child needs to learn responsibility at a young age. By learning to be responsible, a child learns respect for themselves as well as others, self preservation, dedication and to be proud of themselves. Many parents think teaching your child responsibility is best done by assigning chores, and following through with punishment when chores are not completed. This is not true.

Children learn to complete the chores, only to stay out of trouble. The child will not learn the deeper value of the lesson. Your goal is teaching responsibility, this include self-esteem and pride for oneself. You will not reach this goal only by punishing your child when he doesn’t complete the tasks/chores. Teach your child to be proud of what they have achieved and the lessons are successful. These lessons will play a role in your child’s whole further adult life and ultimately he will be teaching the lessons to his children.

What you teach your children will often be seen in they adult lives, especially at work. If they have learned to stya out of trouble, this is the pattern they will follow at work. Never aiming higher, just staying low, will be enough for them. if you teach them self pride and reward them for doing a good job, they will seek out more in life.

Providing a challenge for your children is a huge factor in teachign responsibility. tack on special bonuses each week to spice up chores. This will raise enthusiasm for an otherwise boring job. For instance, if taking the trash out is the chore, add an additional motivation to take the job one step further. Let them clean teh driveway or the garage.

Children love special things as rewards. Especially things they have been wanting, like a toy or sports equipment, cash, even stickers. These type of reward systems are good for teaching responsibility, but don’t forget to incorporate teamwork into the lesson. While folding laundry or making the bed, hold a race, make it a competition. These lessons will create a desire for success in them.
