In today’s economy it can be tough to make ends meet. With rising costs it’s common that wages are not keeping pace. Saving can be a real challenge. Here are some strategies to help:

Figure out what’s important to you. Identify things that are real needs and the things that are simply wants . Top priority should always go to needs first and if anything left over, then the wants, not the other way around. This requires alot of discipline.

Make sure that you spend your money only on basic needs like food, transportation, shelter, and clothing. These basic needs are worth spending for because these are important for your health and security. They are the things that you cannot live without and should be allotted in your budget.

Make a list of the wants. Find the best prices possible then see if it fits in the budget after all the needs are paid for. If not, either save up funds until you can afford it, or forget about want. It’s important to try to develop the trait of being satisfied with what we’ve already got, not always needing the newest and best stuff.

You may avoid unwanted purchases by trying the item first before buying it. This is to make sure that the item is worthy enough to acquire. There are instances that you tend to buy things without even knowing its effectiveness and quality. You have to keep in mind that you always need to spend your money wisely on items that have quality and are according to your budget.

Make a budget in advance. Think about the timing of your purchases. Try to make them at the end of a season when you can really pick up some deeply discounted prices.

Do comparison shopping to find the best prices. Do not limit your options to just one store only. You may find the best item that can be useful and affordable to you by window-shopping first rather than buying by impulse. Many stores out there carry the same items and can offer lower prices. Sometimes buying online is cheaper than in a brick and mortar store, but factor in shipping charges when comparing.

Save more money by conserving electricity. Turn off appliances that are not in use. Turn off lights when you’re not actively in those rooms. Try to adjust your heating or cooler temperatures just a few degrees for some savings.

You can save on your transportation by traveling wisely. It is recommended that you make your itinerary to help you to not forget your destinations. When you do errands try to do them in groups that in close proximity to each other. Being organized will help you save money and time.

Here’s the painful one, habits! Ouch, I feel your pain. Take a look at personal habits, smoking, drinking, lattes, sodas, candy, etc. Take one month and track every penny spent going to these habits. You may find the price exorbitant and expose a very real area of overspending. It may be the time to bite the bullet and either quit or severely modify that habit.

Look at any other area that might be a financial drain that is really not necessary. Perhaps bartering with people you know for services or products could be a feasible option. Get creative, you might be surprised at what you can come up with.
